Opening Title: What activities did you choose for your exercise regimen?

I started to do some research, to conferences, started reading a lot of books, trying to determine what I needed to do from an exercise standpoint. Went and joined a gym and realized in the research that there needs to be a balance, there needs to be aerobic activity and there needs to be strength training. So what I did, I was a swimmer in high school, as a young adult I ran a marathon, and I always liked riding a bike, so I just increased those activities but then added in some of the things that your typical gym offer. Certain exercise classes, particularly core classes, and then also began doing strength work, got a trainer, and started learning how to use the equipment, because I really hadn’t done a lot of weight work since I was much, much younger.

And I became I wouldn’t say addicted to it, but really fell in love with this entire regimen of working out almost daily, It’s a challenge balancing a busy lifestyle: a job, a busy home life, and finding time to work out, so what I have done is I slot those workouts into wherever I can, sometimes it’s getting up early in the morning and getting out the door, sometimes it’s what I do for a lunch break in the middle of the day, it’s easy enough to have lunch at my desk, but dash out the door at noon and go down to the gym and get 45 minutes or an hour in. Or right at the end of the day. You know squeeze that workout in, and still get back home in time to have dinner with the family and try to keep that balance going. And you gotta accept, I have to accept the notion that I’m not going to get a workout in every day, there’s gonna be days in the week or weeks where work is demanding, home life is demanding, and I’m not going to get a workout in

Dave participates in the active surveillance program at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). Dave pursued major changes in his diet, while adding supplements and following a vigorous exercise program. He also consults with an oncologist outside of the UCSF program. In December, 2014, Dave had an 18-core guided MRI-ultrasound fusion prostate biopsy at UCSF and all tissue samples came back benign. In summary, Dave’s prostate cancer has become undetectable by MRI five years after diagnosis.
